As we all take one last collective deep breath before Art Basel officially opens its doors on Tuesday, we have some exciting news to announce.
During our Frieze and May Sales coverage, we floated the idea of producing a special monthly report that would only be available to paying subscribers. We’re happy to say that the idea was met with a tremendous amount of positivity from our readers, and we’ll be publishing our first such report tomorrow evening.
Timed to coincide with the fair, the first edition of The Canvas Monthly includes a Q&A with Art Basel’s Global Director, Marc Spiegler, in which he responds to some of the recent talk in the industry about booth costs and David Zwirner’s suggestion that larger galleries should help subsidize the costs of fairs for smaller galleries.
Brett Gorvy, of the increasingly powerhouse gallery Lévy Gorvy takes us through the history of his wildly popular Instagram account, shares his experiences on what does and doesn’t work on the platform, and speaks to the increasing prevalence of serious collectors who use the app to seek out new pieces for their collections.
And Sean Kelly, of his eponymous gallery, takes us behind the scenes of his recently launched “Collect Wisely” campaign aimed at reintroducing “core values of collecting and connoisseurship” back into the conversation with collectors.
We also have previews of some of the more exciting pieces galleries are bringing to Basel this year- complete with pictures to share with your advisory clients, industry job listings, and an exclusive look at what exactly happened at Peter Brant’s Interview magazine these past few years.
Of course we’ll also be reporting daily throughout the week for our usual fair coverage, and we’ll include snippets of the above for our regular subscribers. However, we at The Canvas would love to have you as part of our inner circle. And let’s face it, $18 a month is less than after-work drinks with your coworkers- and they’re less fun than us anyway. In any case, isn’t this exactly what company credit cards and expense accounts are for in the first place?
The Canvas Monthly will help you make sense of the major art industry headlines and trends- and the power-brokers who help shape them. Receive the first edition tomorrow night by subscribing below.
